Not a model.
A discipline.
For leaders who decide.
BRAVE is the proprietary leadership framework that sits underneath all of the work — advisory, speaking, and development. Five characteristics. One question. What would you do if you were one per cent braver?
Five characteristics.
Each one a discipline,
not a quality.
BRAVE was developed through years of work with leaders navigating high-stakes decisions. Not from theory — from the patterns that appear when leaders succeed and fail at the moments that matter. Each characteristic can be developed. None arrive fully formed.
Boldness is not recklessness. It is the willingness to act on an informed conviction when others are waiting for certainty that will not come. The leader who is bold knows the difference between courage and carelessness — and is not stopped by the fact that a decision cannot be made without risk.
Resilience is not the ability to absorb punishment indefinitely. It is the capacity to recover well — to learn from what went wrong without being defined by it, and to continue functioning with clarity when the pressure is sustained. The resilient leader does not pretend difficulty is not difficult.
Agility is the willingness to change direction when the evidence demands it — without confusing change with inconsistency. The agile leader holds a view firmly enough to act on it, and loosely enough to revise it when the information changes. That is harder than it sounds when reputation and ego are in the room.
Vision is not optimism. It is the capacity to hold a clear picture of what matters and where the organisation is headed — and to communicate it in a way that produces alignment rather than compliance. The visionary leader knows the difference between a strategy and a story, and understands that the story is what moves people.
Ethics is not compliance. It is the standard by which a leader makes decisions when no one is watching and the rules do not provide a clear answer. The ethical leader asks not just what is permitted but what is right — and accepts that the answer sometimes costs something. That cost is part of the leadership.
A diagnostic.
A development journey.
A decision lens.
As a diagnostic
In advisory engagements, BRAVE provides a structured lens for assessing where a leader's thinking and behaviour are well-developed and where the gaps are creating risk. Not a test — a framework for honest conversation.
As a keynote
The Brave Leader keynote introduces BRAVE to a leadership audience — not as a model to memorise but as a set of questions to carry. The goal is to change how people think about what leadership requires, not to add another framework to their toolkit.
As a journey
One Percent Braver is built around the BRAVE framework — twelve sessions, structured across the arcs of Self, Think, and Lead. The framework provides coherence to what might otherwise be a collection of disconnected leadership topics. It is the spine.
The framework is
developed fully in
the book.
The BRAVE Leader by David McQueen. A study of what leadership requires when certainty disappears, and the five characteristics that allow leaders to navigate complexity with clarity.
"What would you do if you were one per cent braver? Not fearless. Not transformed overnight. Just one per cent more willing to act, to challenge, to decide."
