WHO IS IN YOUR SQUAD?

One of the challenges facing those from underrepresented groups when they enter the workforce is a feeling of loneliness. You have worked hard, probably got more certificates than your peers ,entered an arena where you are probably the first and sometimes the only.

The mantra running through your head is about working hard, or the nebulous, working twice as hard, and in so doing, you have probably not even given real thought to who your squad is. That support team that will help you to navigate this new terrain, without losing your identity or sense of purpose.

Your squad, personal advisory board, or however you want to label it, are those people who understand you, share your values, aren’t afraid to challenge you if they disagree with you, will champion you and will definitely listen to you.

It can include peers, coaches, mentors, family members and friends. Just as long as they have a clear understanding of how they can support and uplift you. They don’t have to meet at the same time, like your standard advisory board, but you want to be able to call on them, and similarly be available for them, as a sounding board.

I started this off focusing on those from underrepresented groups, because it is here I often see this isolation and loneliness which breeds imposter syndrome, anxiety, burn out trying to fit in, etc. but it can apply to anyone. Build that squad. They don’t need to be a fixed group either. Make it fluid. Make it work.
