Digital Detox: Resetting My Mind and Body

For the month of August 2024 I decided to have a digital detox.

A space where I moved all social media apps including Linkedin and Instagram off my phone.

I also removed Whatsapp and Telegram apps from my phone. And even though technically I could access them from my desktop it was quite refreshing not to have to.

For the record I still watch Youtube. I can’t do without my gardening fix. Anyhoo.

The deliberate removal of so many of these distractions in my day has meant that I have been able to have a bit more focus on some of the key development and admin work I have been doing. I have also been working on limiting my email access while I dive into doing more creative and to also to limit distractions in doing some of the more mundane tasks.

As some who coaches leaders on high performance, I like to practice what I preach on the things that allow us to get things done.

I am still experimenting with other things such as

  • Putting my phone on airplane mode when I got to sleep.

  • Changing the background of my iPhone from colour to black and white

  • Unsubscribing from some email lists

One of the downsides with technology is that whilst it’s so convenient to access it is also something that can soak up all your energy. Having an intentional space to switch off and focus on the key areas of work you are an expert in is essential. Glad to be able to model much of what I share with my clients around best practice.
