One of the most interesting things I have found as a professional speaker is the amount of people who still think that they can book you for free. For many years I did a lot of my own bookings, a cardinal sin for any budding speaker, and got involved in the emotional tangling of negotiating price. I still get a lot of speaker enquiries with universities (especially entrepreneurial societies?) being the biggest culprits thinking they can get free speaking. For me the clue is in the title. Professional speaker. This article is aimed at professional organisations and bodies (not schools and colleges) who wonder why it is I charge a fee. The Research There are a plethora of speakers out their. Motivational, after dinner, business, youth, inspirational and whatever other title is the flavour of the month. Many of us include speaking and lecturing as core part of our business model. Whether we take bookings directly or through agencies we charge a healthy fee for this. The reason being is that we speakers, the ones worth their salt, have spent … Continue reading →

Over on twitter this afternoon I suggested that being an entrepreneur should not be a reaction to joblessness.IIt sparked of a number of conversations with others who 1) asked to me to explain 2) suggested I was wrong 3) didn’t see it as a problem if it took people off the dole. All valid and reasonable responses to my comment. However I will actually take it to the next level and suggest that entrepreneurship should not be a desperate reaction to joblesness. Allow me to explain. Are You Desperate? Most entrepreneurs I know who have set and are running successful businesses have done so out of inspiration not desperation. OK tell the truth some have been desperate but to get their ideas out as opposed to being frustrated that they have not got a job. There is a big difference. Take for example my friend Shaa Wasmund founder of SMARTA.com Her inspiration to run the business was born out of wanting to provide an alternative free service to entrepreneurs that organisations like Business Link didn’t seem to be serving. Take … Continue reading →

Jamal Edwards is a young entrepreneur and is the founder of SB TV a music focused video channel hosted on YouTube. I had the pleasure of interviewing him for Virgin Media Pioneers in 2010 and we had a ball. In a world where a lot of young people are unsure about what career paths to take or whether there are jobs available, his attitude and approach to life could well serve as an inspiration to many. Check out his comment about the competition. Priceless. Enjoy. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-0f55n1wlg]

I woke up to an interesting article about enterprise education in the Telegraph. Penned by Peter Jones, one of my business heroes, it focused on the new direction of Enterprise UK a company who I have worked with for the last five years. Before I continue I should mention I still work alongside Enterprise UK/Virgin Media as a presenter on the Virgin Media Pioneers programme and I am also speaking in schools in November for Global Enterprise Week as a result of the affiliation with Enterprise UK. The Issue Now we have dealt with those issues I am taking Peter to task on points made in this article. Namely his swipes made about waste through the make your mark campaigns run by Enterprise UK and also his potshots made at Young Enterprise. A Brief History I have worked alongside a number of enterprise initiatives as a speaker and facilitator. I have had the pleasure of speaking on behalf of Enteprise UK as well as facilitating enterprise programmes on behalf of Young Enterprise, Entrepreneurs in Action, various Education Business Partnerships, YMCA … Continue reading →
